Emergency Services

The Best Care When It Counts Most

In an emergency, every second counts. That’s why we’ve made top-quality, high-tech emergency treatment available for our neighbors, friends and family living on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Playing a key role in Olympic Medical Center’s Level III Trauma Center designation from the Washington State Department of Health (DOH), the Emergency Department in Port Angeles is equipped and staffed to handle life- and limb-threatening emergencies, any time of day or night. Physicians and nurses are specially trained, and general and orthopedic surgeons are available at all times. When highly specialized care is needed, our team can stabilize patients for transfer.

The Olympic Medical Center Emergency Department has 20 exam rooms, including secure rooms that create a safe environment for patients who are a risk to themselves or others, a negative air-pressure room for patients with certain communicable diseases, and a decontamination room.

When you or a loved one experience a medical emergency, you can rest assured that you’re in expert hands at Olympic Medical Center.

Air Ambulance Services

Organizations that provide air ambulance services to Olympic Medical Center patients include Airlift Northwest and Life Flight.

When patients are in need of air transport to a higher level of care, Olympic Medical Center works with Airlift Northwest and Life Flight to determine which organization has an aircraft closest to Port Angeles to ensure the most timely transport.

Airlift Northwest and Life Flight each offer memberships programs, but the memberships are not reciprocal between the organizations. Olympic Medical Center prioritizes the most timely transport to meet the medical needs of patients who are critically ill or injured and cannot guarantee that a patient’s member organization will be utilized for air transport from OMC.

Stroke Experts on Call

To ensure that stroke patients receive the best care possible, our TeleStroke program links Olympic Medical Center emergency physicians to experts at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute through real-time, secure videoconferencing technology.

When a patient arrives in the emergency department at Olympic Medical Center with stroke symptoms, day or night, the Swedish stroke team is paged. Members of the team – which include a stroke team physician in coordination with a specially-trained advanced practice clinician or registered nurse – can log in on their computers to complete a TeleStroke examination and determine if a patient qualifies for available rescue therapies that can reverse the devastating effects of stroke for some patients if it is administered within a timely manner.
