Olympic Medical Center Receives Computed Tomography (CT) Accreditation

August 1, 2011 - The American College of Radiology (ACR) has awarded a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT) to Olympic Medical Center. The accreditation award extends to the CT units in both Sequim and Port Angeles.

“A large amount of hard work by our skilled technologists, particularly from our lead CT Technologist Rod Horstman, has gone into gaining this distinction with our diagnostic CT program. We’ve also had the administrative support needed to make this accreditation a reality,” says Deby King, director of diagnostic imaging at Olympic Medical Center. “The ACR gold seal of accreditation alerts our patients that they are receiving care in a facility that meets the highest level of standards for imaging quality and safety.”

The ACR gold seal of accreditation is awarded only to facilities meeting “ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards” after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed.

Olympic Medical Center is also accredited through the ACR for its hospital-based nuclear medicine and all its digital mammography sites.

Olympic Medical voluntarily goes through a vigorous review process as part of the accrediting process to:

·         Ensure it meets nationally accepted standards of care

·         Confirm personnel are well qualified, through education and certification, to perform medical imaging, interpret images and administer appropriate radiation therapy treatments

·         Verify equipment is appropriate for the test or treatment, and the facility meets or exceeds quality assurance and safety guidelines

About CT Scans (Computerized Tomography)

A CT scan is a series of thin beams of x-rays that rotate around the body, and are then processed by a computer to produce cross-sectional pictures. These detailed images are of significant value when a physician is concerned with the proper diagnosis of his or her patient. A CT scan is normally used to look at bone and soft tissue.

About the ACR

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic / interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
