Olympic Medical Center and Jefferson Healthcare Select Swedish Medical Center as Potential Affiliate

March 17, 2011 - In a joint announcement, Olympic Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Eric Lewis and Jefferson Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Mike Glenn announced today that their respective hospitals have each selected to move toward next steps with Swedish Medical Center of Seattle in their tertiary affiliation selection process.  Forks Community Hospital has a board meeting on March 22 to discuss their next steps in this selection process.

Olympic Medical’s board of commissioners approved the measure this evening during its board meeting. Jefferson’s board also approved the direction and will join Olympic Medical in negotiating a non-binding Letter of Intent with Swedish.

“We have unanimous recommendations to proceed to next steps with Swedish Medical Center,” says Eric Lewis, chief executive officer, Olympic Medical Center. “This is an exciting time for Clallam County, as this affiliation will greatly impact health care in a positive, very meaningful way.”  Mike Glenn, chief executive officer, Jefferson Healthcare, concurs. “This is an important step in the process.  The selection of Swedish Medical Center as our Seattle-based partner will bring patients of Jefferson County much needed access to tertiary services and technology.  Also, we are pleased to be partnering in a regional manner with Forks Community Hospital, Olympic Medical Center and Harrison Medical Center, and believe these partnerships will also add value to our local patients.”

Separately, talks are ongoing with Harrison Medical Center in regards to health care issues and planning on the Olympic Peninsula.

Camille Scott, chief executive officer of Forks Community Hospital adds, “The coming together of health care services for one goal – quality patient care – is the outcome we expect through these partnerships.”

Recommendations to proceed with Swedish as the tertiary affiliate came from Olympic Medical Center’s board tertiary medical center task force, medical staff executive committee, OMP Physicians Council and hospital administrators. Jefferson Healthcare’s board of commissioners also approved to investigate the possibility of an affiliation with Swedish at Jefferson’s March 16 board meeting.

A non-binding Letter of Intent will be negotiated with Swedish Medical Center with completion expected by April 20. Forks Community Hospital is expected to join the process. The goal is to complete final agreements in the next three to five months. A series of public meetings to gather input and give more information are planned. The agreements are subject to final approval by each organization’s board of commissioners.
