Dr. Sandra Tatro Earns American College of Surgeons Fellowship

February 5, 2010 - The American College of Surgeons initiated Dr. Sandra Tatro, general surgeon, as a Fellow at its 95 annual clinical congress in Chicago in late October 2009.

Dr. Tatro received a medical doctorate degree in 1996 from the University of New Mexico and is currently part of Olympic Medical Center’s medical staff. In 2004, Dr. Tatro attained board certification from the American Board of Surgery. She enjoys the general surgery field and has a strong professional interest in breast cancer care, endocrine surgery – including the thyroid and parathyroid glands, and all procedures in the abdomen. She holds membership in other professional societies including the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

“It has been a long road to become a fellow of the American College of Surgeons,” says Dr. Tatro, general surgeon. “I owe this honor to those who have supported me from the beginning, my parents, siblings, partner, teachers, administrators, employees, but especially to my patients who have trusted me to care for them in very frightening situations. I look forward to many years of service here in Port Angeles, where I have found a remarkable sense of community and a place that I am proud to call home.”

 About the Fellowship

By meeting the College’s stringent membership requirements, Fellows of the American College of Surgeons have earned the distinguished right to use the designation of “FACS” (Fellow, American College of Surgeons).

An applicant for the Fellowship must be a graduate of an approved medical school; must have completed advanced training in one of the 14 surgical specialties recognized by the College; must possess certification by an American surgical specialty board; must present a surgical case from their own practice to a panel comprised of surgeons in their geographic area; and must have been in practice in the same geographic location for at least one year at the time of his or her application. Before admission into Fellowship, the surgeon must further demonstrate ethical fitness and professional proficiency, and his or her acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by three-fourths of its Board of Regents.
