Olympic Medical Center Recognized Again By American Diabetes Association

January 8, 2010 - Olympic Medical Center has received recognition from the American Diabetes Association for its outstanding diabetes self-management program.

The American Diabetes Association awards “Education Recognition” to organizations that have knowledgeable health care professionals who provide patients with information on how to manage diabetes. Olympic Medical Center has maintained this recognition by the American Diabetes Association since the late nineties. This recent certification is active for the next four years.

“It is an honor to receive this award,” says Graciela Harris, director of Nutrition Services at Olympic Medical. “Our diabetes educators and registered dietitians work hard to continue their education so we can offer high quality service and education to our patients.”

Approximately 7 percent of the Clallam County population suffers from diabetes, according to Christin Maks, RD, certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian at Olympic Medical, and the risk is growing among our community’s youth.

“Ask your doctor if you’re at risk,” says Candi Schaefermeyer, RN, certified diabetes educator at Olympic Medical Center. “If you are, some lifestyle changes can help you stay healthy. If you do have diabetes, our program can help you stay in control. Diabetes can be a tough condition to manage. We can work with you and your provider to keep you on track.”

For more information about the diabetes education program, please call Olympic Medical Center’s nutrition services department at (360) 417-7125 or log on to www.olympicmedical.org and click on “Services” and “Nutrition / Diabetes”.
