Lewis Receives 2016 Grassroots Champion Award for Washington State

PORT ANGELES  – In an announcement last week, the American Hospital Association (AHA) recognized Olympic Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Eric Lewis with the prestigious Grassroots Champion Award for the state of Washington.

Eric Lewis Earns Grassroots Champion Award

The honor is bestowed upon leaders who effectively deliver the hospital message to elected officials, broaden the base of community support for hospitals and advocate tirelessly on behalf of patients, hospitals and communities, said Richard Pollack, president and executive officer of the AHA, in a March letter to Lewis notifying him of the honor.

The Washington State Hospital Association nominated Lewis as the Grassroots Champion for Washington State due to his dedication to the hospital mission on both the local and national level.

"I have had the pleasure of working with Eric for a number of years now and he is clearly dedicated to our patients, our organization as a whole and to the community we serve,” says John Nutter, 2016 board president, and active member of the board’s Legislative Advocacy Committee. "I can’t think of anyone who deserves this award more than Eric – he has been tenacious at advocating with state and federal officials to ensure they know our community and our local hospital, and that rural health care is appropriately funded.”

Advocating at the federal and state levels for adequate reimbursement for services, as well as appropriate legislation and regulations for rural health care has been a top tactic for Olympic Medical. A strategic investment in multiple visits by Olympic Medical personnel to Washington, DC, and Olympia over the past few years has proven successful in building strong relationships with legislators and has contributed to a number of positive outcomes. Lewis spearheaded the effort to ensure board members, executives and other key team members at Olympic Medical Center made numerous trips to Washington, DC, and Olympia throughout 2015 to meet with elected officials.

Lewis is humbled by the recognition, and in a nature that those who know him come to anticipate, he attributes much of this award to the hardworking team that surrounds him at Olympic Medical Center, and he shies away from the attention brought by the accolade.

"It is 100 percent true that Eric is well supported in this work by an outstanding team,” says Nutter. "However, front and center of it all is Eric’s knowledge, vision and direction, and he deserves the recognition for his effectual leadership.”
