Emergency Department Expansion Ready for Patients

August 28, 2015 -

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Noon on Wednesday, Sept. 2

Emergency Department Expansion Fact Sheet

PORT ANGELES – An individual has certain expectations when suffering from a medical emergency. For example, 9-1-1 will answer the call or an emergency room staffed with skilled physicians and nurses will be ready to leap into action.

With the recent expansion of the emergency department, Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles is more prepared than ever to provide emergency and trauma care when it’s needed. The emergency department now has up to 20 beds and the accompanying level of increased staffing to meet the community’s demand for emergency services 24/7– a demand that has increased over the past few years.

"For a multitude of reasons, our emergency department has been increasingly busy,” says Lorraine Wall, RN, Chief Nursing Officer, Olympic Medical Center. "We are now fully set up to triage and room patients more efficiently, allowing us to see patients with lower-level urgent care needs more promptly.”

The Washington State Department of Health recently re-designated Olympic Medical’s emergency department as a Level 3 Trauma Center. For patients, this translates to access to trauma services, including life- and limb-threatening needs, any time – day or night.

Additionally, emergency medicine physicians and personnel are specially trained to address the variety of medical conditions that may come through the door. "We have a highly skilled staff that not only provides excellent care each and every day, but has shown great patience and fortitude throughout the expansion project,” says Wall.

The new expansion includes special features previously unavailable, including a shower room accessible from the outside for hazardous material exposure, a negative air-pressure room to safely contain patients with specific communicable diseases, and "swing rooms” that can allow staff to quickly secure medical equipment, an option that is useful if a patient is a risk to himself / herself or others and a safe environment is needed.

"Having the additional beds and capabilities in the newly remodeled emergency department is significant for meeting the growing needs of our community,” says Wall.  Please click here Fact Sheet.pdf  for Fact Sheet on the emergency department expansion

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Noon

Olympic Medical Center leadership, along with the Port Angeles Ambassadors, will present a brief ribbon cutting ceremony at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, in front of the emergency department entrance – ending prior to the scheduled 12:30 p.m. Olympic Medical Center Board of Commissioners meeting. Due to patient privacy concerns and the sensitive nature of emergency medicine, the emergency department will not be available for public viewing.
