Olympic Medical Center Earns ACR Ultrasound Accreditation

August 16, 2012 - The American College of Radiology (ACR) recently awarded a three-year term of accreditation in ultrasound to Olympic Medical Center. The accreditation award extends to sites in both Sequim and Port Angeles.

Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency waves to produce images of internal body parts to help providers diagnose illness, injury or other medical problems.

Each sonographer who performs ultrasounds at Olympic Medical has certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

“Our sonographers each hold two or more certifications in fields such as abdominal, obstetric/gynecology, breast and vascular, and have all passed the physics portion of ultrasound,” says John Troglia, operations manager, Olympic Medical Imaging Center. “This shows strong dedication on the part of our staff, as training occurs for two to four years and requires both academic and clinical experience. Our sonographers are also required to maintain ongoing continuing education to ensure they are current in the field.”

Olympic Medical accreditation by the ACR is approved for general ultrasound, obstetric/gynecology and vascular. In 2012, Olympic Medical expanded its ultrasound services in Port Angeles and Sequim, specifically in vascular ultrasound.

“We strive to meet the growing need and demand for local, quality vascular ultrasound services,” says Deby King, director of diagnostic imaging. “We are proud to receive this accreditation and to have such well-qualified sonographers providing these services.”

About the ACR

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards, following a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
