Olympic Medical Center Achieves Quality Assurance Certification

February 21, 2018 -
ISO 9001:2015 is an International Standard
PORT ANGELES – After a three-plus year journey, Olympic Medical Center received ISO 9001:2015 certification through its accrediting body, DNV GL.

"This is a proud moment for Olympic Medical Center as it certifies that we are providing health care in a way that provides quality assurance to our patients,” says Eric Lewis, Chief Executive Officer, Olympic Medical.

This certification shows OMC is working in a manner that organizes processes, improves the efficiency of processes and continually improves. ISO 9001 certifies the Quality Management System utilized by Olympic Medical, and is a process-oriented approach to documenting and reviewing structure, responsibilities and procedures required to achieve high-quality care for patients.

"We have had some major improvements resulting from our ISO journey that have had great impacts on patient care,” says Lewis. "For example, we implemented ‘bedside reporting’ in the ICU, which allows for the patient to hear timely, relevant information about his or her care and treatment directly from their RNs at shift change. This leads to better communication with patients and families, increased coordination among staff, enhanced care and better outcomes, reduced noise on the unit and an overall improved patient experience.”

Other major initiatives, to name a few, include the establishment of a Patient Family Advisory Council, improving the moderate sedation program, centralizing our contract repository and developing a comprehensive contracts management system, and many others.

ISO-certified Quality Management System improves quality and enhances patient safety by providing a roadmap for organizations to focus on the effectiveness of clinical, business and support processes to ensure high quality care is achieved. According to DNV GL, the standard promotes the adoption of a process approach emphasizing the requirements, added value, process performance and effectiveness, and continual improvement through objective measures.

This certification benefits patients as it helps Olympic Medical Center:
Ensure quality and safety in the treatment of patients;
Identify and manage risk to patients, staff and the organization;
Determine, manage, monitor and improve complex and interrelated processes;
Comply with relevant legal requirements;
Implement best practice routines and procedures;
Prevent unexpected incidents from occurring;
Identify areas of improvement and ensure continual enhancement of the Quality Management System; and
Provide assurance to patients, authorities and other stakeholders that Olympic Medical has implemented a well-functioning management system and are committed to continual improvement.
