Ambulatory
Monitoring
In some cases a physician may need to know what
is happening with a patient’s heart rhythm during normal day-to-day
activities, due to symptoms that are suspected to be heart-related.
In these instances, they may order an ambulatory or event monitor.
These monitors are portable devices that record heart
rhythms over a period of time. Olympic Medical Center uses two types
of monitors:
- Instromedix King-of-Hearts is a small recording device attached
to two electrodes, which are worn on the chest for a period of about
two weeks.
- Instromedix Heart Card is a small “credit card” device
that is held on the chest when symptoms occur.
Heart rhythm information is recorded on these devices
and can be sent via telephone to the cardiac services department,
where it is analyzed and forwarded to a physician for diagnosis. A
final report is then prepared and sent to the patient’s physician
within seven working days.
