OMC Employee Vickie Everrett Now a Certified Diabetes Educator

December 6, 2010 - Olympic Medical Center employee Vickie Everrett, RD, CNSC, CDE, recently passed a certification exam through the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Everrett is now a certified diabetes educator (CDE).

“Eating healthy is a challenge for many patients with diabetes,” says Graciela Harris, director of nutrition services and diabetes education. “As an experienced dietitian who enjoys cooking, Vickie knows how to address the challenge and helps develop a fun and healthy cooking experience that benefits the patient’s entire family.”

Everrett has been working for Olympic Medical as a registered dietitian since October 2007, providing clinical inpatient care and outpatient nutrition consults, as well as offering direction to the patient room service team. As a certified diabetes educator, Everett will educate patients on the importance of meal planning, exercise and goal setting. She will also provide medication and insulin instruction, psychosocial support, and help minimize risks and complications of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

As a registered dietitian, Everett is also a highly trained professional who works with people to help establish healthy eating patterns. Some of the services a dietitian offers are identifying hospitalized patients with special nutritional needs, assessing the nutritional needs of a patient and developing plans to improve a patient’s nutritional status. They also offer diet and nutrition counseling, including personalized eating plans for women who are pregnant and special diet counseling for patients with diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

The Certification Examination for Diabetes Educators is designed and intended solely for health care professionals who have defined roles as diabetes educators. Everrett will now see diabetes patients for any diabetes related issue, in addition to nutrition consults. This is an enhancement to the current diabetes program, as all dietitians on staff are now fully qualified as certified diabetes educators, available to see diabetic patients and teach diabetes classes.
