Olympic Medical Center Highlights National Nutrition Month

February 25, 2010 - Olympic Medical Center will celebrate National Nutrition Month with good food and healthy advice. During the month of March, Olympic Medical Center will participate in many activities to build awareness of the connection between nutrition and health by providing opportunities for sampling healthy, flavorful foods and providing useful nutrition information.

Olympic Medical Center will kick things off at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 at the “Taste of the Market” – a special addition to the weekly OMC Farmers Market showcasing the talents of Seasons Café Executive Chef Matthew Fineout and his team. They will provide samples of the nutrition-rich dishes they prepare for patients, staff and visitors. Staff and community members will have the opportunity to take away some of the delicious healthy recipes to try at home.

“Many people know that in order to have a healthy lifestyle they need a healthy diet,” says Graciela Harris, director of nutrition services. “But people have a hard time planning healthy meals and determining what foods are best.”

Olympic Medical Center’s registered dietitians offer education and advice on how to improve what you eat and how to develop a healthy eating routine. To learn more about our nutrition services department, please call (360) 417-7125. To learn more about Olympic Medical’s Nutrition Month activities, please click here.

American Dietetic Association Suggestions
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) has some advice on ways to start improving your diet:

  • Focus on fruits and veggies: Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks. Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic.
  • Look locally: From farmer’s markets to community-supported agriculture, you have many options to find new, fresh foods in your area.
  • Make calories count: When you are choosing between options, focus instead on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need. Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren’t always the healthiest options.
  • Test your taste buds: Expand your horizons. Try a fish you’ve never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new health favorites to add to your regular grocery list.
  • Trick yourself with treats: If you have a sweet tooth, have fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you want a snack in the afternoon, have some trail mix or nuts.
