Olympic Medical Heart Center Expands Cardiology Service on the North Olympic Peninsula

October 10, 2014 -

Cardiologist Alexander Pan, MD, Joins Heart Team

SEQUIM – Like most matters of the heart, sometimes it’s about finding someone who is the right fit, and feels like family. In the case of the recently formed Olympic Medical Heart Center, Olympic Medical searched in partnership with Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute for a cardiologist who would complement the team as well as increase access for cardiology care in the community.

As a result of this tireless search a new partner in care has joined the Heart Center team: Alexander Pan, MD.

"We wanted another high-caliber cardiology physician who wanted to work in a small rural community such as ours,” says Rebecca Corley, MD, chief physician officer, Olympic Medical Physicians. "Our collaboration with Swedish resulted in bringing a third cardiologist to the North Olympic Peninsula. We couldn’t be happier with the addition of Dr. Pan – he is a skilled cardiologist and he has impressed us with his patient-centric approach and positive attitude.”

Dr. Pan, a member of Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute, joined the Heart Center in September, primarily seeing patients out of the Sequim location on the second floor of the Medical Services Building at 840 N. 5th Ave., Ste. 2400. He works closely with other clinical cardiologists from the OMP division, Kara Kurtz Urnes, MD, FACC, and James Emery, MD, FACC, as well as his partners with Swedish Heart and Vascular. Tracy Zaher-Lee, ARNP, general cardiology, and Robert Gipe, MD, heart rhythm management specialists, also work alongside him at the Heart Center.

Dr. Pan received his medical degree from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and recently completed his cardiology fellowship training at the University of Hawaii in June 2014.

As a community hospital in a rural setting, Olympic Medical does not have the volume to support the most complex surgical heart procedures, such as bypasses and stents. That’s where Olympic Medical’s partnership with Swedish Medical Center affords our community extra benefit.

"Our connection to Swedish’s team of nationally renowned cardiologists and cardiac surgeons allows us to fill in the gaps in invasive cardiology services,” says Scott Kennedy, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Olympic Medical Center. Our patients benefit from having direct access to the vast array of highly specialized procedures that only a place like Swedish can offer.”

Consumer Reports magazine recently ranked the Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute among the top 15 hospitals in the nation for outcomes in coronary bypass and aortic valve replacement.
