After eight months of preparation, Epic is live at Olympic Medical Center and its Port Angeles and Sequim facilities. The May 4 go-live marked the transition to a single database, enterprise-wide electronic health record (EHR) system. Epic, the most highly rated EHR available today, is replacing several previous systems as part of OMC’s implementation project with Providence Health & Services Community Connect. OMC is an affiliate of Seattle-based Swedish Health Services, which joined forces with Providence in February of 2012.
“OMC employees and medical staff are performing exceptionally well. We are addressing technical issues as they arise, and each day is better and better,” says Eric Lewis, chief executive officer, Olympic Medical. “These improvements to continuity of care and communication will transform health care in our community and for those patients needing services through our affiliated partners at Swedish. This EHR is a key part of our Swedish affiliation that has the goal of offering more local services and better communication for patients needing to travel to Swedish for services not offered locally.”
"Overall things are going very well. We are not seeing anything that is outside the norm for Epic go lives of this size," says Steve Hayter, senior director of outreach and Epic Community Connect at Providence Health & Services. "The real success at OMC are the people who work here and their leadership. Their dedication and commitment to improving the health care of their patients is palpable and implementing the premier, fully integrated, electronic health care information system is an integral part of improving that care.”
Benefits of Epic EHR
Epic will enable OMC to deliver comprehensive and coordinated care for patients across all care settings by making patient health information available to providers in real time, giving them instant access to a patient’s medical history. Patients will also be able to view their health record through an online patient portal, giving them greater participation in their care.
Using the patient-centered Epic electronic health record (EHR) system, we'll be able to:
Help Patients - Creates one record, giving patients easy access to their information at home or any of our care settings
Help Clinicians - Supports consistent and predictable care; gives clinicians access to complete patient information in any of our care settings
Help Administrators - Simplifies back-office functions, including creating one linked billing record
Help Our Community - Fosters continued improvement and learning, advancing quality and encouraging innovation
